What Is Gematria?

Gematria is an ancient method of interpretation that assigns numerical values to letters in order to reveal the hidden numerical meaning of words and sentences. Its roots lie in the Hebrew and Hellenic traditions. In Islamic civilization it is known as abjad reckoning (Ar. “ḥisāb al-jummal”).

The basic principle of gematria is simple: every letter corresponds to a number, the total numerical value of the word is calculated, and this value is matched with other words or concepts. Two words with the same total are held to share a hidden bond.

Historical Roots

This relationship between numbers and letters belongs to a broad tradition that stretches from Babylon to Persia and from Greece to the Islamic world. The Pythagoreans believed that numbers were the foundation of the cosmic order. In the Hebrew Kabbalistic tradition, gematria is one of the four methods of exegesis used to uncover the deeper meanings of the Torah.

In the Islamic world, abjad reckoning works by assigning numerical values to the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet. Disciplines such as talismans, wafq, jafr and the Yed-i Esma are built on this calculation. Jābir ibn Ḥayyān’s Mīzān al-Ḥurūf (The Balance of Letters) is one of the oldest texts to argue that letters carry both chemical and cosmic properties.

Gematria and Astrology

Astro-Gematria places the total numerical value of the letters on the 360-degree zodiac wheel. The resulting degree is read as the celestial signature of the word or name.

Abjad Reckoning and the Science of Jafr

Abjad is a numerical coding system based on the old Semitic order of the Arabic alphabet. Its first four letters, “alif-bā’-jīm-dāl” (أبجد), form the word that gives the system its name.

The best known of the disciplines connected with abjad is jafr (Ar. al-jafr). Jafr aims to foretell the future through the mysterious relationship between letters and numbers. Ibn ʿArabī held that jafr expresses “the cosmic spirits of the letters”.

Wafq is the system of magic squares in which numbers are arranged in square matrices to reflect cosmic harmony. Every row, column and diagonal adds up to the same number, and this is taken as the earthly image of celestial balance.

The method used in this calculator is a workshop adaptation that follows the common logic of Hebrew gematria, Greek isopsephia and the Arabic abjad tradition. The result is shown on screen. The intermediate steps of the calculation are not shared.
