Gematria is the practice of assigning numerical values to the letters of a word so that the word as a whole acquires a number, and words that share a number share a hidden affinity. The technique appears across the ancient Near East and Mediterranean: Hebrew gematria, Greek isopsephia, Arabic abjad numerals, and the Latin numerus calculatorius of the medieval grimoires.
In astrological hermeticism, the gematria value of a name is read as a planetary or zodiacal signature. Numbers reduce to a single digit (1–9) or are matched to one of the seven classical planets through traditional tables, Picatrix Book II.10 gives one of the canonical sets. The technique was used in Renaissance natural magic for talisman composition, in Cornelius Agrippa's De Occulta Philosophia, and in the Arabic ʿilm al-ḥurūf (science of letters) of figures like al-Būnī.

In Hebrew kabbalah, the word echad (one) and ahavah (love) both equal 13, suggesting a deep theological link.
In astrological practice, gematria is most often applied to client names, business names, the names of saints or angels invoked in electional work, and the titles of works being written. The number reveals the planetary signature that the name carries, useful for understanding why certain names feel "right" or "wrong" for a given chart.
