What Are Hermetic Lots?
The Hermetic Lots are mathematical points attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and form one of the fundamental techniques of Hellenistic astrology. A lot is calculated by combining three points (typically ASC + Planet A - Planet B) to obtain a precise ecliptic degree. These points reveal hidden themes and life domains within the chart.
The term "Hermetic" refers to the legendary Hermes Trismegistus, a mythical figure blending Greek Hermes and Egyptian Thoth. In the Hellenistic tradition, he is considered the original author of the lot formulas. These mathematical points encode the relationship between the Ascendant and two celestial bodies, producing a sensitive degree that acts as an additional indicator in chart interpretation.
Hellenistic-era astrologers such as Paulus Alexandrinus, Vettius Valens and Firmicus Maternus systematically employed these lots. The formulas in this calculator are based on the original Panaretos (Hermetic) sources. Vettius Valens, in his Anthology, devoted entire chapters to lot interpretation and considered them essential for timing techniques.
The Panaretos System
The Panaretos system contains 7 lots corresponding to the 7 classical planets. Each lot represents a specific life domain and the planetary energy associated with it. Fortune (Moon) and Spirit (Sun) are the foundational lots; the other 5 are built upon them. Eros is assigned to Venus, Necessity to Mercury, Courage to Mars, Victory to Jupiter and Nemesis to Saturn.
Together, these 7 lots offer a holistic picture of the natal chart: material fortune, spiritual direction, love, obligations, courage, victory and fate.
The Seven Lots in Detail
Lot of Fortune (Tyche): The most well-known lot, calculated from the luminaries and the Ascendant. It indicates material prosperity, physical health and the body's general condition. The house and sign of Fortune show where luck flows most naturally in the native's life.
Lot of Spirit (Daimon): The counterpart of Fortune, Spirit represents the soul's direction, willpower and conscious intention. While Fortune deals with what happens to us, Spirit reveals what we actively create and the spiritual path we pursue.
Lot of Eros: Assigned to Venus, Eros reflects love, desire and attraction. It shows how we experience romantic connection, what we find beautiful, and the nature of our deepest emotional bonds.

Lot of Victory (Nike): Ruled by Jupiter, Victory points to success, achievement and triumph. It reveals the life areas where the native can expect recognition, rewards and the expansion of influence through effort.

Day and Night Chart Difference
In Hellenistic astrology, sect (the day/night distinction) is a fundamental principle. If the Sun is above the horizon it is a day chart; if below, a night chart. In the lot formulas, planets A and B are swapped for night charts. This reversal reflects the different energy dynamics of day and night births.
Sect is not merely a technical detail — it fundamentally alters the chart's hierarchy. In day charts, the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn in a diurnal sign lead the way. In night charts, the Moon, Venus and Mars in a nocturnal sign take prominence. This distinction extends to the lots: every Panaretos formula reverses for night charts, ensuring that the correct luminary and planetary emphasis is applied.
If the Sun is below the ASC (in the 7th house or houses below the horizon) it is a night chart. A simple rule: if the Sun is in houses 1-6 it is generally a day chart, in houses 7-12 a night chart, though the precise distinction depends on the horizon axis.
Interpreting the Lots
Sign and Degree
The sign a lot falls in shows how that life domain will be experienced. For example, Fortune in Aries indicates that luck comes through courage and initiative. The degree can further refine interpretation when combined with fixed stars or divisional charts.
House Placement
The house the lot occupies determines in which area of life that theme is active. If Spirit is in the 10th house, spiritual direction is connected to career and social status. Whole-sign houses are the traditional method used with lots in Hellenistic astrology.
Ruling Planet
The ruler of the sign a lot falls in is the lord of that lot. The condition of this planet in the chart (its house, sign, aspects) determines the lot's potential. A strong ruler makes it easier to fulfil the lot's promise.
