Total Solar Eclipse

The Moon completely covers the Sun. The sky darkens and the Sun's corona becomes visible. A rare and spectacular celestial event.

Duration: 2 - 7.5 minutes

Annular Solar Eclipse

The Moon is centered on the Sun but cannot fully cover it. A bright "ring of fire" forms around the Sun's edge.

Duration: 5 - 12 minutes

Partial Solar Eclipse

The Moon covers only a portion of the Sun. The Sun appears as a crescent. The most common type of eclipse.

Duration: ~30 minutes

How Does It Occur?

A solar eclipse occurs during the New Moon phase when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. Because the Moon's orbital plane is tilted, eclipses don't happen at every New Moon.

2 - 5 times per year
