What Is Mundane Astrology?
Mundane astrology (from Latin mundus = world) is the branch of astrology that deals with nations, societies, cities, and world events. Unlike natal astrology, which interprets individual birth charts, mundane astrology reads a country's "chart" and relates events on a global scale to planetary cycles.
This branch is the oldest form of astrology. While the concept of the individual horoscope only emerged during the Hellenistic period (2nd century BCE), mundane astrology began thousands of years earlier in Babylon with observations about the fate of kings and nations.
History: From Babylon to Today
The roots of mundane astrology trace back to the omen tradition of Babylon around 2000 BCE. Sky observations recorded on the Enuma Anu Enlil tablets correlated eclipses and planetary conjunctions with the fate of kings, wars, and natural disasters.
This tradition was systematized in the Hellenistic world with Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, developed in the Islamic world by Abu Ma'shar (Albumasar), Masha'allah, and al-Kindi, and practiced in Europe by great astrologers such as Bonatti and William Lilly.
Modern mundane astrology adapts and applies the tools of this classical tradition to today's world. Our 2026 Aries Ingress analysis is a contemporary application of this tradition.
Fundamental Tools of Mundane Astrology
Four fundamental analytical tools are used in mundane astrology. Of course, the techniques employed are not limited to these.
1. Aries Ingress Chart: The chart for the moment the Sun enters 0° Aries is regarded as the year's opening chart. For a country, this chart shows the year's general atmosphere, fundamental themes, and critical periods.
2. Eclipses: Solar and lunar eclipses are the most powerful triggers in mundane astrology. The signs and degrees where eclipses fall indicate which nations and which subjects will come to the forefront during that period.
3. Great Conjunctions: Conjunctions of outer planets determine long-term cycles. The Saturn-Neptune conjunction (~36 years), the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction (~20 years), and the Uranus-Pluto conjunction (~140 years) are the most significant.
4. National Natal Charts: The chart for the moment of a country's founding or independence is used as that nation's "natal chart." By analyzing the effects of transit planets on this chart, country-specific forecasts are generated.

Mundane Meanings of the Planets
In mundane astrology, each planet represents a societal institution or actor. Unlike individual charts, here planets describe not individuals but institutions, structures, and collective forces:
| Planet | Mundane Meaning |
|---|---|
| Sun ☉ | A country's identity, singularity, and existence (Spiritus). Head of state, authority, national identity. In a country's chart, the focus begins with the Sun through the lens of identity. Damage to a country's symbol means damage to the country's vitality and existence. |
| Moon ☽ | The people, women, public opinion, the general mood of society. To understand the people's structure, one looks at the 1st house, the Moon, and celestial bodies falling in Cancer. These are the general symbols of the people. |
| Mercury ☿ | Press, communication, trade, education (excluding specialized fields), journalists, writers, information production and transmission, computers, cargo companies, engineers, advertising and agencies. |
| Venus ♀ | Art, diplomacy, women's rights, economic prosperity. In classical astrology, it is the ruler of the 5th house and, together with the Sun, the universal symbol of art. |
| Mars ♂ | Military, police, aggression, conflict, a country's war capacity, attacks suffered, firefighters, iron, energy. |
| Jupiter ♃ | Law, religion, higher education, expansion, universities, foreign countries, aviation and aircraft, media, legends, expansionist policies. Together with Saturn, they are the societal celestial bodies and primary indicators for examining the past, present, and future from a societal perspective. |
| Saturn ♄ | Structures, buildings, systems, restriction, the elderly, traditional institutions, scientific developments. It symbolizes buildings and structures because in its purest form it is a technological intervention and the coming together of many elements. It also symbolizes systems for this reason. Authority figures, judges, commanders. |
| Uranus ♅ | Revolutions, radical changes, unexpected events, organizations, technological innovations, independence movements, rebellions, electricity and electronics. |
| Neptune ♆ | Seas and oceans, illusions, collective unconscious, drugs and liquid substances, prisons, hospitals, secret societies, spies, state secrets, spirituality, healers, earthquakes and tsunamis. |
| Pluto ♇ | Deep transformation, destruction and rebirth, nuclear energy, conspiracy theories, mafia, biological weapons, chemistry labs, forensic medicine, cloning, chemotherapy, researchers, hidden power structures. |
How Is It Applied in Practice?
In mundane astrology practice, a two-layered analysis is generally conducted:
Layer 1: The internal structure of the Aries Ingress chart -- house conditions, planetary placements, aspects, and rulership chains. This layer determines the year's general atmosphere.
Layer 2: The transits of Ingress planets to the country's natal chart -- showing the country-specific reflections of the year's events.
The 2026 Mundane Outlook
2026 is an extraordinarily intense year from a mundane astrology perspective. The Saturn-Neptune conjunction occurring at 0° Aries, Uranus's transition into Gemini, 4 eclipses, and the nodal axis change make this year a "turning point year."
