What Is Retrograde? Why Do Planets Go Backward?

The astrology term you probably hear the most on social media is "Mercury is in retrograde," along with the now-familiar refrains: messages get lost, flights are delayed, an ex texts out of the blue. Of course, retrograde is not exclusive to Mercury, and its effects are far deeper and more nuanced than pop culture suggests. So what does retrograde really mean? Do planets actually move backward? And if you have a retrograde planet in your natal chart, what does it signify?

In Brief

Retrograde is when a planet appears to move backward in the sky as seen from Earth. The planet does not actually reverse course -- it is an optical illusion. However, in astrology, these periods are interpreted as times of slowing down, returning, introspection, revision, and repetition in the areas governed by that planet.

What Is Retrograde? The Astronomical Reality

The word retrograde comes from the Latin retrogradus, meaning "stepping backward." Of course, planets do not actually go backward. Retrograde is an apparent motion (apparent retrograde motion). Because the Earth and other planets move at different speeds in different orbits, during certain periods a planet appears to be moving in reverse.

The easiest way to understand this is the highway analogy: imagine you are driving in a fast car and you pass a slower car. At the moment of passing, the slower car appears to move backward, but in reality both cars are moving forward -- you are simply faster. The mechanism differs slightly between planets closer to the Sun than Earth (Mercury, Venus) and distant planets (Mars to Pluto), but the basic principle is the same. Relative motion creates the illusion of backward movement.

Ancient astrologers knew about this phenomenon. They meticulously calculated the "stations" (standstill points) and retrograde periods of the planets. For them, even though the planet was not truly moving backward, they recognized that it signaled a time when the matters the planet represents would regress.

Phases of the Retrograde Cycle

A planet's retrograde cycle consists of five phases, each with its own distinct meaning:

  1. Pre-Shadow: Before the planet goes retrograde, it first enters the degrees it will later revisit during retrograde. During this phase, themes begin to emerge slowly: hints, signals, warnings. It is not yet fully retrograde, but the atmosphere starts shifting.
  2. Station Retrograde: The planet appears to stand still in the sky and then begins moving backward. This is one of the most intense points of the cycle. A moment of pause, holding your breath, changing direction. Astrologically, a "turning point" marks the return to past matters.
  3. Retrograde Period: The planet appears to move backward, retracing the degrees it previously traversed. During this phase, themes of slowing down, delay, revision, reassessment, returning to unfinished business, introspection, and deepening come to the fore in the areas that planet governs.
  4. Station Direct: The planet again appears to stand still and then resumes forward motion. The second intense point. Clarity, decision-making, the restart of forward momentum. But it does not immediately reach full speed.
  5. Post-Shadow: The planet is direct again but has not yet passed the degree where retrograde began. During this phase, the themes that emerged during retrograde are integrated and lessons are put into practice. The cycle is fully complete once the planet passes the degree where retrograde began.

Which Planets Go Retrograde?

The Sun and Moon never go retrograde because retrograde depends on orbital mechanics, and the Earth-Sun-Moon dynamic works differently. All other planets (Mercury to Pluto) go retrograde. Each planet's retrograde frequency and duration differ:

Planet Retrograde Frequency Retrograde Duration % of Year Retrograde
Mercury 3-4 times per year ~3 weeks ~19%
Venus Every 18 months ~40 days ~7%
Mars Every 26 months ~2.5 months ~9%
Jupiter Once per year ~4 months ~30%
Saturn Once per year ~4.5 months ~36%
Uranus Once per year ~5 months ~41%
Neptune Once per year ~5.5 months ~43%
Pluto Once per year ~5-6 months ~44%

You will notice a striking point in this table: outer planets (Jupiter to Pluto) spend nearly half the year retrograde. This means that a large portion of people have at least one outer planet retrograde in their natal chart. Outer planet retrogrades operate more at a generational and inner-world level than at an individual level.

Retrograde Meaning of Each Planet

Mercury Retrograde

The most well-known and most frequently experienced retrograde. Slowing down and disruptions in communication, technology, transportation, contracts, and trade. But actually, Mercury retrograde is a period for rethinking: returning to old projects, finishing incomplete conversations, revising plans.

Venus Retrograde

Introspection around relationships, values, money, and aesthetics. Returning to past relationships. Ex-partners, old friendships, and former values come back into focus. Not ideal for starting new relationships or making major aesthetic changes (haircuts, cosmetic procedures) because what you find beautiful may shift during Venus retrograde.

Mars Retrograde

Slowing down in energy, motivation, anger, and sexuality. Physical energy drops during Mars retrograde, motivation decreases, and ongoing projects stall. Suppressed anger may surface. A time to review existing projects rather than launching new initiatives.

Jupiter Retrograde

Turning inward on growth, belief, and vision. Outward expansion pauses; inner wisdom deepens. Questioning your beliefs, reassessing your educational path, internalizing spiritual seeking. During Jupiter retrograde, excessive optimism gives way to realistic assessment.

Saturn Retrograde

Introspection around discipline, structure, and responsibility. Instead of externally imposed rules, inner discipline is questioned. The question "Does this responsibility truly belong to me?" comes to the fore. During Saturn retrograde, your relationship with authority figures is reassessed.

Uranus Retrograde

Innovation and freedom themes turn inward. Inner revolution instead of outer revolution. Breaking thought patterns, questioning old habits. During Uranus retrograde, sudden external events decrease, but internal awareness leaps increase.

Neptune Retrograde

Imagination, intuition, and spirituality turn inward. Illusions begin to dissolve; realities start to clarify. During Neptune retrograde, the areas where you have been deceiving yourself become more visible. Spiritual practices deepen, but the risk of external deception decreases.

Pluto Retrograde

Transformation and power dynamics turn inward. Inner transformation instead of external power struggles. Shadow work, suppressed emotions surfacing. During Pluto retrograde, your need for control is questioned and your capacity to let go increases.

Natal Retrograde: Retrograde Planets in Your Birth Chart

If a planet was retrograde at the moment of your birth, it is shown with the "Rx" symbol in your natal chart. A natal retrograde indicates that the planet's energy is internalized. Rather than being expressed outwardly, it is experienced inwardly. The themes of the retrograde planet may point to recurring subjects in your life.

Natal Mercury Rx

The thought process is internal, deep, and slow. Delay in communication but great depth. Written expression is usually stronger than verbal. A tendency to look back at the past. The ability to reassess old ideas.

Natal Venus Rx

Values and relationship patterns are processed internally. Difficulty expressing love but a deep capacity for loving. Attachment to past relationships. Unique aesthetic and beauty sensibilities that differ from mainstream trends.

Natal Mars Rx

Energy and motivation are turned inward. Difficulty expressing aggression outwardly. Risk of suppressed anger or passive aggression. But when properly channeled, tremendous inner resilience and strategic thinking capacity. High chance of success in tasks involving repetitive actions.

Natal Jupiter Rx

Growth and expansion are experienced internally. May not appear outwardly lucky, but inner richness and wisdom run deep. A tendency to create one's own belief system. Does not accept others' dogmas.

Natal Saturn Rx

Discipline and responsibility are internalized. Overly harsh on oneself; the inner critic is strong. The need to create one's own rules rather than submitting to external authority. Maturation comes late but runs deep.

Outer Planet Natal Retrogrades

Outer planet retrogrades (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) operate at a generational level, so their natal effects are more subtle. They are felt at the inner world and collective consciousness level rather than at the individual level.

What to Do During Retrograde Periods

Retrograde periods are not to be feared but to be utilized. Every retrograde is ideal for actions that begin with "re-":

  • Rethink
  • Reassess
  • Reconnect
  • Reorganize
  • Review

If possible, postpone new beginnings (new jobs, new relationships, major purchases) until after retrograde. But life does not stop, and it is not always possible to delay everything. If you must make decisions during retrograde, be extra careful and thoroughly consider every detail.

Return to unfinished business. That half-completed project, that unsent message, that postponed conversation -- whatever it is, turn your attention to it. Back up your data: digital files, important documents, communication records. Be patient; delays and disruptions are the nature of retrograde. Do not take them personally and adapt to the flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do planets really go backward?
No. Retrograde is an optical illusion caused by the Earth and other planets moving at different speeds. The planet always moves forward; it only appears to move backward when viewed from Earth.
Is it bad to start a new job during Mercury retrograde?
It is certainly not "bad," but it does require caution. Communication errors and misunderstandings are more likely during Mercury retrograde. Therefore, read contracts extra carefully and set clear terms. Life does not stop according to the retrograde calendar; if you need to act, go ahead, just be more careful.
What happens if I have a retrograde planet in my natal chart?
That planet's energy is internalized. Rather than being expressed outwardly, it is experienced inwardly. This is not a weakness; it is a different mode of operation. A natal retrograde planet strengthens the capacity for deep inner work on that subject, noticing details others miss, and learning from the past.
Can the Sun and Moon go retrograde?
No. The Sun and Moon never go retrograde. Retrograde is a phenomenon arising from the orbital relationship between the Earth and other planets. Since the Sun does not orbit the Earth (it is the other way around) and the Moon is Earth's satellite, the retrograde mechanism does not apply to them.
Are all retrogrades equally impactful?
No. Inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars) create more noticeable effects at the individual level because they move faster and govern personal matters. Outer planets (Jupiter to Pluto) spend a large part of the year retrograde and their effects are more generational and internal. Mercury and Venus retrogrades are the most felt in daily life.
