The astrolabe is a two-dimensional model of the sky. It projects the celestial sphere onto a flat surface using stereographic projection.

History

Invented in ancient Greece, it became widespread in the Islamic world from the 8th century onward. It was used for centuries by astronomers, navigators and timekeepers.
