Appearance and Observation

The second brightest star in the sky. Yellow-white in color, prominent in the southern hemisphere.

Astrological Meaning

Canopus is a star of guidance, teaching, and navigation. Its Saturn-Jupiter nature gives it both structural depth and broad vision. Canopus gives the person in contact with it the potential to become a writer, teacher, or navigator. Its association with the Sage Agastya in the Indian tradition symbolizes ancient wisdom and long life. In the Chinese tradition, it is known as the Old Man Star and indicates longevity. Due to its very distant position from the ecliptic (-75.9 degrees), conjunction is a projection.

Mythology

Canopus is the name of the helmsman of the Spartan king Menelaus in the Greek tradition. In Egypt, the star Canopus was considered sacred and used as a reference point in temples. In the Indian tradition, Agastya is the legendary sage who brought wisdom to the south. In China, being seen as the Old Man Star makes it mysterious and revered.
