Alpha Canis Majoris
Canis Major (the Great Dog)
Magnitude: -1.46 · Nature: Jupiter-Mars
Origin: Greek — Seirios (Scorching, Shining)
Derives from the Greek word 'seirios' (scorching). It received this name because it rises with the Sun during the most intense period of summer heat (the dog days).
The brightest star in the night sky. It shines prominently in the winter sky with its blue-white color. When near the horizon, it scatters rainbow colors due to atmospheric refraction.
Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, is a star of great success, fortune, and worldly brilliance. Its Jupiter-Mars nature combines expansion with action. Sirius grants those whose planets contact it an extraordinary potential for public radiance. Success tends to be grand and spectacular. However, due to its very distant position from the ecliptic (-39.6° ecliptic latitude), Sirius's conjunction at its ecliptic longitude (14° Cancer) is a projection and does not reflect its true position in the sky. For this reason, declination parallels and parans are far more reliable indicators for Sirius than conjunction.
Sirius is the most sacred star of ancient Egyptian civilization. The heliacal rising that heralded the flooding of the Nile (and thus the agricultural season) formed the foundation of the Egyptian calendar. The Egyptians identified Sirius with the goddess Isis. The Sopdet (Sothis) festival celebrated the star's reappearance. In Babylon, it was known as the Arrow Star. The Greeks associated it with the dog days (dies caniculares) and believed that the summer heat was caused by the warmth Sirius added to the Sun. In the Persian tradition, Tishtrya heralded the end of the dry season as the rain-bringing star. In the Indian tradition, Mrigavyadha (the Deer Hunter) is the cosmic hunter who follows Orion.
Sirius is the brightest star of the Canis Major (the Great Dog) constellation. In Greek mythology, the Great Dog is Orion's loyal hunting dog. When Orion was placed in the sky, his dog was placed beside him. Sirius is located at the dog's mouth or chest and is the brightest point in the entire sky.
Sirius on the Ascendant gives a brilliant, charismatic presence that is immediately noticed in society. The person may overshadow those around them. Success tends to come early and in grand fashion. However, due to the 'scorching' nature, it carries an intensity that requires care in relationships with others.
Sirius on the MC carries extraordinary success and public recognition potential in the career field. Traditional sources use the phrase 'honor in the eyes of government.' The potential for reaching the pinnacle in business, politics, or the arts is very high.

Sirius conjunct the Sun gives extraordinary public brilliance and success potential. The person naturally attracts attention and is drawn to the grand stage. However, due to the ecliptic latitude (-39.6°), this conjunction is a projection. If a declination parallel or paran exists, the effect is much more powerful.
