Eta Tauri (Pleiades)
Taurus (Taurus)
Magnitude: 2.87 · Nature: Moon-Mars
Origin: Greek — Ἀλκυόνη (Alkuone) (Kingfisher Bird / Sea Nymph)
Named after one of Atlas's seven daughters (the Pleiades) in Greek mythology. Alcyone threw herself into the sea after her husband Ceyx drowned, and was transformed into a kingfisher bird.
The brightest star of the Pleiades star cluster. It is the leader of the 'seven sisters' seen as a fuzzy patch with the naked eye.
Alcyone (the Pleiades) carries themes of vision, mystical experience, and deep grief. Its Moon-Mars nature combines emotional intensity with action. The Pleiades grants extraordinary intuitive ability, openness to mystical experiences, and a visionary perspective to those whose planets contact it. However, traditional sources associate the Pleiades with eye problems and grief. In modern practice, this is interpreted as wisdom born from deep experiences of loss and the capacity to 'see the unseen.'
The Pleiades hold mythological significance in nearly every culture on Earth. In Greek mythology, they are the seven daughters of Atlas, placed in the sky by Zeus to escape the pursuit of Orion. In Babylon, as MUL.MUL (Star of Stars), they marked the beginning of the new year. In Japanese tradition, they are known as Subaru (coming together). In Australian Aboriginal culture, myths tell of the flight of young maidens. In Indian astrology, the Krttika nakshatra is associated with Agni (the fire god) and carries themes of purification and sharpness. Nearly all ancient cultures used the Pleiades as a fundamental reference point for the agricultural calendar.
Alcyone is the brightest member of the Pleiades open star cluster, located in the shoulder region of the constellation Taurus. The cluster appears as 6-7 stars to the naked eye but actually contains over 1,000 stars. Together with Aldebaran, it forms the most important stellar structures of Taurus. The Pleiades were among the most important celestial markers in the ancient world for determining the beginning of the year and agricultural cycles.
Alcyone on the Ascendant bestows an intuitive, visionary, and emotionally deep personality. The inclination toward mystical experiences is powerful. Striking eyes or a compelling gaze may be noticeable in the physical appearance. Significant experiences of loss may occur throughout life, but these open the door to profound wisdom.
Alcyone at the Midheaven carries career potential in visionary leadership, mystical teaching, or intuitive counseling. The public image is enigmatic and alluring. The potential to shine in artistic fields, especially music and poetry, is high.
