Alpha Leonis
Leo (The Lion)
Magnitude: 1.35 · Nature: Mars-Jupiter
Origin: Latin — Regulus (Little King)
A diminutive form of Rex (king). This name was given by Copernicus. The Greeks called it Basiliskos (little king), and the Babylonians named it Sharru (king).
A blue-white star located at the heart of Leo. The faintest among first-magnitude stars, and one of the four Royal Stars.
Regulus is the most royal of all fixed stars. It activates the drive toward ambition, authority, and visible success. The person is drawn to positions of leadership, fame, or influence. Its Mars-Jupiter nature combines both the courage to act and the capacity to govern with vision. However, Regulus's price is undeniable: success always comes with a test of integrity. Pettiness or revenge can lead to the loss of everything Regulus has given. Its very close position to the ecliptic (latitude 0.47 degrees) makes it the most reliable Royal Star for conjunctions.
The Babylonians named Regulus Sharru (King) and timed their coronation ceremonies to the star's heliacal rising. In Persian stellar religion, Venant governed the summer solstice as the Guardian of the North. Ptolemy in the Tetrabiblos attributed a Mars and Jupiter nature to it. In nearly every ancient culture, Regulus was associated with sovereignty, divine right, and the power to rule. Medieval astrologers regarded Regulus as the single most powerful star for success, but warned that it demands absolute integrity: revenge or pettiness leads to the loss of everything Regulus has given.
Regulus is located at the heart of the Leo constellation. The Greeks associated Leo with the Nemean Lion, the first of Heracles' twelve labors. The lion's hide was impervious to weapons, and only the hero's supernatural strength could defeat it. This mythology imbues Leo with themes of invincibility, royal courage, and proving one's worth through supreme effort. Regulus, positioned at the lion's chest, represents the vital center of this royal power.
Regulus on the Ascendant gives an undeniable aura of authority, ambition, and personal magnetism. The person is drawn toward leadership positions and public visibility. Wealth and honor follow, but so do tests of character: pettiness or revenge can trigger the dramatic loss of everything given.
Regulus at the MC is one of the most powerful career success placements in star astrology. Public position, official authority, and military distinction are powerfully indicated. When benefic planets join this configuration, the influence is multiplied. However, Regulus's warning is most severe here: the crown can be lost as dramatically as it was won.
Interpretations of natal conjunctions with this star.
Regulus conjunct the Sun gives a natural authority and a powerful public identity. You are drawn to leadership positions and inspire respect effortlessly. There is a royal quality to the personality. However, Regulus's lesson is that using power without humility leads to downfall.
Regulus conjunct the Moon gives an instinctive sense of sovereignty. Your emotional stance is so naturally commanding that those around you surrender without being asked. Your nurturing style is not gentle but protectively royal in its authority. When emotionally wounded, your response is not withdrawal but a proud reassertion of your claim.

When you love with the generosity of a true sovereign, your partnerships become the greatest source of lasting power.
Regulus conjunct Mars produces a formidable leader with both the courage to act and the ambition to conquer. Military or competitive competence is strengthened. You excel in arenas that require decisive authority. The challenge is balancing ruthlessness with nobility.
Regulus conjunct Jupiter increases fortune, generosity, and the capacity for wise governance. You are drawn to philosophy, law, or governance and reach positions of wide influence. Success comes through combining vision with magnanimity.
Regulus conjunct Saturn tests the relationship between power and responsibility. Authority is slowly earned through disciplined effort, and you must prove you can bear the weight of leadership without collapse. Lasting success requires humility in the face of duty's demands.
