Alpha Tauri
Taurus (Taurus)
Magnitude: 0.85 · Nature: Mars
Origin: Arabic — al-Dabaran (The Follower)
Named so because it rises after the Pleiades star cluster. Ptolemy also referred to it as Lampadias (the torch bearer).
The orange-red giant star that forms the Eye of the Bull. Its Arabic name means 'follower' because it appears to follow the Pleiades star cluster across the sky.
Aldebaran, as one of the four Royal Stars, carries themes of leadership, honesty, and moral integrity. Its Mars nature gives it a warrior's determination, but this battle is directed not outward but toward the person's own wholeness. Aldebaran promises social visibility and authority to those whose planets contact it. However, the price of this promise is honesty: Aldebaran's test is whether one deviates from truth even at the height of success. As the Guardian of the East in Persian tradition, Aldebaran governs new beginnings and first steps.
Aldebaran was the Guardian of the East (Tascheter) in the Persian Empire as one of the four Royal Stars, marking the spring equinox (around 3000 BCE). In Babylon, it is recorded as the Eye of the Bull in the MUL.APIN tablets and was one of the fundamental reference points of the agricultural calendar. In Egypt, the heliacal rising of the star determined the ritual calendar in the temples of Hathor. Ptolemy attributed a Mars nature to it in the Tetrabiblos. In medieval Islamic astronomy, al-Sufi listed Aldebaran as one of the most important first-magnitude stars. In Indian astrology, the Rohini nakshatra is considered the Moon's favorite mansion and is associated with fertility, abundance, and beauty.
Aldebaran, as the brightest star of the constellation Taurus, forms the right eye of the Bull. In Greek mythology, Taurus is the form Zeus assumed to abduct Europa. The constellation of Taurus also hosts the Pleiades and the Hyades star clusters. Aldebaran appears in front of the Hyades cluster but does not actually belong to it, being much closer to us.
Aldebaran on the Ascendant bestows a powerful physical presence, a distinctive facial expression, and a natural authority. The person is noticed in society and drawn toward leadership positions. However, throughout life they face tests of honesty: every great success brings a moral choice point.
Aldebaran at the Midheaven powerfully indicates the peak of career, public recognition, and official authority. The potential for advancement in military, legal, or administrative fields is high. Ptolemy's attribution of Mars nature manifests most clearly here: authority is gained, but maintaining it requires constant integrity.
