Astrological Meaning

Antares is a star of intensity, passion, and excess. Its Mars-Jupiter nature grants immense power and an urge for expansion, but this power can easily become destructive. Antares bestows upon the planets it contacts an extraordinary charisma, hypnotic attraction, and deep emotional intensity. As a Royal Star, it promises great success, but its test is not succumbing to excess. Obsession, vengeance, and self-destructive passion are the shadow side of Antares. In the Persian tradition, as the Watcher of the West, it governed the autumn equinox and endings.

Mythology

In the Persian Empire, Antares was known as Satevis, the Watcher of the West, marking the autumn equinox (around 3000 BCE). In Babylon, it was recorded as the King of Its Breast. In Egypt, it was associated with Selkis (the Scorpion goddess) and used in protective talismans. Ptolemy attributed a Mars and Jupiter nature to it. In Indian astrology, the Jyeṣṭhā nakshatra (The Eldest) is associated with Indra and carries themes of leadership, power, but also loneliness. Medieval astrologers particularly warned about the danger that arises when passion and destruction become intertwined with Antares.

Constellation Context

Antares is located in the heart of the Scorpio constellation. In Greek mythology, the Scorpion is the creature that killed Orion. Artemis (or Gaia) sent the Scorpion to punish Orion for his arrogance. For this reason, Scorpio and Orion never appear in the sky at the same time. Antares, positioned in the chest of Scorpio, represents the center of this lethal power.
