Alpha Ophiuchi
Ophiuchus (Serpent Bearer)
Magnitude: 2.08 · Nature: Saturn-Venus
Origin: Arabic — Ra's al-Hawwa (Head of the Serpent Collector)
The name derives from the Arabic designation for the head of the figure who holds the serpent, known in Western tradition as Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer.
Ras Alhague is the brightest star in the constellation Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer. It is a white giant star located at the head of the figure. It lies in the northern part of the constellation, near the border with Hercules, and is easily visible in the summer sky of the Northern Hemisphere.
"Head of the Serpent Charmer" -- Ras Alhague is one of the most important stars in medical astrology. Its Saturn-Venus nature combines discipline with sensitivity, creating the ideal temperament for healing work. It is associated with healing, medicine, pharmacology, and the power to cure or poison. Connected to the mythology of Asclepius, it grants wisdom in dealing with dangerous substances and forbidden knowledge. When well-placed, it produces great healers, physicians, and herbalists. When afflicted, it can indicate danger from poisons, infections, or the misuse of remedies and substances.
Ophiuchus represents Asclepius, the legendary physician of Greek mythology who learned the art of healing from observing a serpent. He became so skilled that he could raise the dead, which alarmed Hades, god of the underworld. Zeus struck Asclepius down with a thunderbolt but honored him by placing him among the stars. The serpent he holds represents the dual nature of medicine -- the same substance that heals can also kill. This mythology is directly reflected in the modern Rod of Asclepius, symbol of medicine worldwide.
Ras Alhague marks the head of Ophiuchus, the 13th constellation along the ecliptic. Though not included in the traditional zodiac, Ophiuchus has been acknowledged since antiquity. The star's position at the figure's head symbolizes the mind of the healer -- the intellect that guides the hands.
